Block paving driveways in Melton Mowbray

Block paving lets you shape a parking area with colour, pattern and borders. A restrained layout can suit a simple frontage, while contrasting edges can make entrances and paths easier to distinguish. We help you choose a design that works with the house and the usable space.

The units must be suitable for vehicle use, supported by an appropriate construction. We ask how the drive is used, including turning, regular deliveries and heavier vehicles. Appearance and load suitability are considered together, so the finished layout serves its purpose.

Patterns, colours and borders

Options depend on the selected block range. Herringbone, stretcher bond and basketweave create different effects, with the pattern chosen to suit the product and expected traffic. A border can frame the driveway or connect it to a path without covering the area in competing colours.

Consider samples beside the house and remember that product shades and weathering can vary. We plan the pattern around edges, covers and narrow areas to avoid unnecessary awkward cuts. Any named product or colour is agreed in the quotation, subject to availability.

Block paving installation: foundations and drainage

Good block paving depends on the formation, sub-base, laying course, joints and edge restraints working together. We assess the ground and intended loading, then specify the construction rather than applying one blanket depth to every property. Supporting layers need appropriate compaction and the edges must hold the paving in place.

Low spots should not be hidden by adding an uneven thickness of bedding. If the existing drive has settled, we investigate the cause and decide what needs replacing. Building the support properly is important to keeping the surface even under daily use.

Conventional and permeable paving

Ordinary block paving is not automatically a permeable driveway. Conventional construction normally needs suitable falls and a drainage arrangement. A permeable system uses appropriate blocks, open jointing material and supporting layers designed to handle water as well as traffic.

The choice depends on the property, ground and drainage requirements. We consider where the water can go and what maintenance the selected system needs. Simply widening the joints in an ordinary block surface does not create a designed permeable installation.

Block paving installation costs and written quotations

We agree the layout, remove unsuitable construction where necessary and establish the required levels. The supporting layers, restraints and drainage are installed before the blocks are laid in the selected pattern. Cutting, jointing and final consolidation follow the product requirements.

Your quotation accounts for excavation, waste removal, access, area, blocks, borders and drainage. Changes around covers, thresholds or curved edges can add detail. We explain the proposed work so you can compare it fairly with a different material or an alternative block range.

Joint care and future repairs

Sweep debris away and keep the joints maintained. Weeds can grow from seeds in material that collects at the surface; they do not always indicate growth through the foundations. Cleaning methods should protect the blocks and jointing, and any material removed from joints needs suitable replacement.

One useful feature of block paving is that a local area can often be lifted for repairs or access to services. Reinstatement still needs care, and new units may not exactly match weathered ones. Tell us about your Melton Mowbray driveway and we can assess a suitable replacement or new layout.

USEFUL ANSWERS

Frequently asked questions

Answers about cost, preparation, drainage and maintenance.

Talk it through with us ↗
Is block paving suitable for a frequently used driveway?

Yes, when the units and supporting construction are specified for the expected vehicles and use. Pattern, restraint, joints and compaction all contribute to performance. A drive used by cars is not automatically designed for heavier delivery vehicles or repeated concentrated loading. We discuss those needs during the survey and select a suitable construction rather than judging suitability by the thickness or appearance of a block alone.

What causes block paving to sink or become uneven?

Settlement can result from weak ground, inadequate sub-base construction, insufficient compaction, failed edges, drainage issues or work to buried services. Loss of jointing material can also affect stability. The surface may need lifting so the underlying problem can be addressed. We assess the pattern and extent of movement before proposing a repair, rather than simply adding more bedding beneath the lowest blocks.

Will weeds grow between the blocks?

They can. Seeds often settle in soil and debris that collects in the surface joints, even on a well-built driveway. Regular sweeping, removing organic material and maintaining the correct joint fill help manage this. A membrane below the construction does not prevent airborne seeds establishing above it. We explain suitable cleaning and joint maintenance for your paving instead of promising a weed-free finish.

Is ordinary block paving permeable?

No: gaps between ordinary blocks do not make the complete driveway a permeable system. Purpose-designed permeable paving uses suitable units, permeable joint aggregate and supporting layers that manage water. Conventional paving generally needs falls and an appropriate run-off route. We specify which construction is proposed and assess ground and drainage conditions before making any claim about infiltration or the planning position.

Can individual blocks be lifted and replaced?

Often they can, making block paving useful where local repairs or future service access are needed. The affected area must be reinstated with sound support, correct levels and suitable jointing. Replacement units may differ from weathered blocks, so exact colour matching cannot be assumed. If movement caused the damage, that underlying problem needs attention before the blocks are relaid.

Which laying patterns and borders can I choose?

Depending on the block range, options can include herringbone, stretcher bond and basketweave with matching or contrasting borders. The selected pattern must suit traffic, shape and manufacturer guidance. We look at the house, entrances and available width when discussing the design. A clear border and a restrained colour combination can define the drive without making the layout unnecessarily complicated.

Does block paving need sealing or re-sanding?

Conventional sand-jointed paving needs its jointing maintained, especially after cleaning that removes sand. Permeable paving uses a different joint material and should not be filled with ordinary sand. Sealing is an optional, product-dependent treatment, not a substitute for sound construction or regular care. Check suitability and any effect on drainage, appearance and slip resistance before applying a sealer; we discuss aftercare for the installed system.

How does block paving compare with tarmac and resin on price and upkeep?

Block paving involves individual laying, cutting and jointing, so layout detail can affect labour costs. Tarmac may suit a simpler continuous finish, while resin costs depend heavily on the receiving base and selected system. Block paving offers local lifting and repair but needs joint care; continuous surfaces have different repair and cleaning considerations. We compare complete site-specific quotations, including drainage and preparation, rather than claiming one material always costs less.
