Tarmac driveway installation in Melton Mowbray

Tarmac is a practical choice when you want a continuous surface with a simple appearance. It suits many domestic parking layouts and can be defined with a contrasting block border or a connecting path. We plan the installation around vehicle movements and the surrounding levels, rather than treating the surfacing as an isolated layer.

The finished drive must have enough support for its intended use. Tell us if vans, trailers or other heavier vehicles will use it, or if tight turning is unavoidable. These details affect the construction and the advice we give you.

Resurfacing or a full replacement?

A sound existing driveway may be a candidate for resurfacing, but an overlay is not a cure for movement underneath. We look for settlement, cracking, failing edges and drainage problems, then check whether adding material would leave acceptable levels at doors, garages and inspection covers.

If the base is unsuitable, excavation and replacement may be the more dependable route. We explain that distinction in the quotation. Covering a visibly damaged surface without understanding the cause can leave the same weak areas working through the new finish.

Edging gives the surface a defined boundary and helps support its sides. A block border can also separate the drive from planting or pick up colours in the house. We discuss shapes and border widths alongside practical considerations such as opening car doors and crossing the entrance on foot.

Conventional dense asphalt should not be assumed to drain through its surface. We plan falls and a suitable drainage route. Porous asphalt is a different, designed system: its supporting construction and the ground beneath must also be considered. The material name alone does not settle planning requirements.

From preparation to compaction

Where excavation is required, the old construction and unsuitable material are removed to allow the agreed supporting layers. We establish the formation, build and compact the sub-base as specified, and complete relevant drainage and edging before surfacing. Ground conditions and loading determine the design; one depth is not appropriate for every site.

Laying and compacting asphalt needs suitable conditions and coordination. Weather, delivery, access and the chosen mixture affect the programme. We discuss how you will reach the property while work is under way and keep vehicle access closed until the surface is ready.

What affects tarmac driveway costs?

The price reflects more than the visible area. Removal and disposal, restricted access, base repairs, drainage channels, changes to covers, kerbs and decorative borders can all affect the work. A straightforward open area can be simpler to construct than a smaller drive with awkward corners and several level changes.

We quote after assessing the property and explain whether the proposal is a new construction, replacement or suitable resurfacing. If you are comparing tarmac with resin or block paving, compare the preparation and drainage allowance as well as the finish.

Care during the first weeks and beyond

Follow the return-to-use advice given for your installation. New asphalt can be more vulnerable to marking, particularly in warm conditions. Avoid turning wheels while the car is stationary and take care with concentrated loads from stands, jacks or narrow supports.

Remove spills promptly using a suitable method; fuel and oil can harm bituminous surfacing. Keep drainage inlets clear and report developing movement rather than repeatedly filling a depression without investigating it. A little attention to how the drive is used helps protect the finish. USEFUL ANSWERS

Frequently asked questions

Answers about cost, preparation, drainage and maintenance.

Can you lay tarmac over my existing driveway?

Sometimes, if the existing construction is stable, suitably prepared and leaves room for the new level. We inspect cracks, movement, edges and water run-off before recommending an overlay. A drive with widespread failure or unsuitable foundations usually needs more substantial work. The survey also checks doors, garage entries and covers, because raising the surface can create problems even where the existing material appears sound.

Is tarmac usually cheaper than resin or block paving?

A straightforward tarmac layout can be economical, especially over a larger area, but it is not automatically the cheapest complete installation. Excavation, access, edging and drainage may account for a significant part of the cost whatever surface you select. We can compare suitable options against the same site requirements. A low surface-only figure is not a reliable comparison with a quote that includes necessary groundwork.

How soon can I drive or park on new tarmac?

Wait for the installation-specific advice we provide. Cooling, mixture, layer thickness, weather and expected loads affect when the surface can be used. Being able to walk on it does not automatically mean it is ready for a parked vehicle or concentrated load. In warm weather, particular care may still be needed after initial use resumes, including avoiding stationary steering and narrow supports.

Will a tarmac driveway need drainage channels?

It may need channels, depending on its falls, surrounding levels and where water can safely go. Conventional tarmac is not normally treated as permeable, so run-off needs a designed route. Some layouts can direct water to an appropriate permeable area within the property; others need additional drainage measures. We check the site before specifying channels and consider their outlet, rather than adding a channel with nowhere suitable to discharge.

Can tarmac be finished with block paving borders?

Yes, block borders can define the driveway and introduce a contrasting colour or pattern. They also need an appropriate foundation and restraint, with the adjacent tarmac finished to the correct level. We discuss border position, widths and transitions at the survey. Keeping the border proportionate to the available space helps retain a useful parking area and avoids unnecessary narrow cuts or awkward corners.

Why do some tarmac drives sink or crack?

Possible causes include weak ground, inadequate supporting construction, poor compaction, drainage problems, roots or loading beyond the design. Ageing and movement can also contribute. The visible damage does not identify a single cause on its own. We assess the affected area and surrounding construction before proposing repairs or replacement, because a new top layer will not stabilise a failing base.

How do I look after tarmac in warm weather?

Avoid turning the steering wheel while the vehicle is stationary, and take care with jacks, stands and other small contact areas. Heat can make asphalt more susceptible to surface marks, especially while it is new. Use the driveway gently and follow the aftercare advice for the installed mixture. Keep oil and fuel away from the surface and ask before applying cleaners or treatments that could affect the binder.

Can a damaged area be repaired, or does the whole driveway need replacing?

A local defect may be repairable when the rest of the construction is sound. Patching normally leaves a visible difference, particularly before weathering, and the cause of the failure should be addressed first. Widespread settlement, repeated cracking or poor levels may make a larger replacement more sensible. We assess the extent of the problem and explain the likely appearance and limitations of a repair.
