Resin-bound driveway installation in Melton Mowbray
Resin-bound surfacing combines aggregate and resin before the mixture is laid, creating a connected stone surface. It offers colour blends that can sit quietly beside brickwork or create a more noticeable contrast. We help you compare the finish alongside borders, entrances and any adjoining path.
Appearance is only part of the decision. The resin system, base, drainage and intended traffic need to work together. We assess your driveway before deciding whether an overlay is appropriate or a new construction is required.

Choose the system, then the colour
Resin-bound and resin-bonded surfacing are different products. In a bound system, the stone and resin are mixed together before laying. In a bonded finish, stone is scattered over applied resin. Their texture and drainage behaviour differ, so the specification must say which system is proposed.
For colour selection, consider a physical sample and the surrounding materials. Ask about the selected resin and its suitability for exposure to sunlight. Any UV-stability claim should relate to the actual product in your quotation, not a general promise made about every resin surface.

A sound base matters
An existing tarmac or concrete base may be usable if it is stable and compatible with the proposed system. Cracks, movement, contamination and unsuitable levels can rule out a straightforward overlay. Joints in existing concrete need particular consideration; resin does not remove movement below it.
A full installation may require excavation, a new sub-base and an appropriate receiving layer. We do not treat loose gravel or ordinary block paving as a convenient substitute for a specified resin base. The quotation explains the preparation so you know what supports the finish.
Permeability depends on the whole driveway
A resin-bound surface can allow water through, but the complete construction determines where that water goes. A permeable top layer over an impermeable base is not the same as a designed permeable driveway. Ground conditions, sub-base and any necessary drainage also need assessment.
We discuss run-off during the survey and explain the proposed route within the property. Planning requirements depend on the location and design, including England’s front-garden paving rules. We do not describe every resin installation as automatically planning exempt or SuDS compliant.
Resin driveway installation and costs
We establish levels and edges, complete the agreed preparation and check the receiving surface before laying the selected resin-bound system. The product requirements and weather conditions govern installation. Moisture, temperature and working time all matter, so the programme must allow the surface to be laid in suitable conditions.
Your quotation takes account of the existing base, removal, area, access, edging, drainage and chosen aggregate blend. Detailed shapes and changes in level can add work. We explain the distinction between the installation programme and the later point when walking or parking is permitted.
Routine care protects the finish
Sweep away leaves and debris, keep drainage routes clear and clean contamination promptly with methods suitable for the resin system. Soil and organic material left on a surface can support growth, and algae may affect grip in damp shaded areas. Low maintenance still involves attention.
Avoid damaging chemicals and aggressive cleaning before checking the supplier guidance. Tell us about unusual vehicle use or heavy point loads so aftercare can reflect them. For a resin driveway in Melton Mowbray, describe your current surface and the finish you have in mind; we can then discuss the next step.

Frequently asked questions
Answers about cost, preparation, drainage and maintenance.
Talk it through with us ↗What is the difference between resin-bound and resin-bonded driveways?
Resin-bound surfacing uses stone mixed with resin before laying, forming a connected aggregate layer. Resin-bonded surfacing uses stone scattered over resin applied to a base, producing a different surface texture and construction. They should not be treated as interchangeable. We focus on resin-bound driveway proposals and explain the selected system, preparation and drainage rather than using “resin” as an unspecified finish.
Can resin be laid over existing concrete or tarmac?
It can sometimes be installed over a suitable concrete or tarmac base. The base must be stable, properly prepared and compatible with the chosen system, with acceptable levels and drainage. Cracks or active movement can affect the resin above, and concrete joints need specific consideration. We inspect the existing construction before recommending an overlay; removing a failing base can be more appropriate than covering it.
Is a resin driveway permeable and does it need planning permission?
A resin-bound layer can be permeable, but the base, sub-base and drainage arrangement determine the performance of the whole driveway. An impermeable base changes the picture. For houses in England, front-garden impermeable paving over five square metres generally needs permission unless run-off goes to a permeable area. Restrictions and property type can affect those allowances. We assess the proposed build-up and recommend checking any uncertainty with Melton Borough Council.
Can resin driveways crack, fade or develop loose stones?
Yes, those problems are possible; resin is not crack-proof or immune to wear. Movement in the supporting construction, unsuitable installation conditions, product selection or damage can affect performance. Colour stability also depends on the specified resin and exposure. We assess the base and identify the proposed system in the quote. If a defect develops, it needs investigation rather than assuming the same repair will suit every cause.
Are resin driveways slippery in wet or icy weather?
A suitable textured resin-bound system can provide grip, but no outdoor surface is universally slip-proof. Ice, algae, leaves, oil and other contamination can make it slippery. Surface choice must reflect slopes and use, and any anti-slip treatment needs to be compatible with the system. We discuss those conditions when planning the driveway and recommend keeping it clean and treating winter conditions with appropriate care.
How much maintenance does a resin driveway need?
It needs regular sweeping and periodic cleaning using suitable products and equipment. Remove leaves, soil and spills before they accumulate, and keep drainage routes open. Shaded or damp areas may need more attention to organic growth. Avoid harsh chemicals or close, aggressive pressure washing without checking the system’s guidance. Resin is not weed-proof: seeds can establish in debris even where the original surface was correctly installed.
How long before we can walk or park on resin?
The period depends on the chosen resin, installation conditions and intended load. Pedestrian access and vehicle access may be allowed at different times. We provide advice for the actual system and conditions rather than a universal curing promise. Keep the area protected until that period has passed, including from pets, bins and deliveries, and ask before placing heavy supports or turning vehicles on the new surface.
What affects the price of a resin driveway?
The largest variables include the area, whether a suitable base exists, excavation, access, drainage and edging. Aggregate blend, the selected resin system and complex shapes also affect the work. An overlay quote and a complete new build-up are not equivalent. Our assessment establishes what is needed beneath the finish so you can compare a defined installation and discuss alternatives before committing.
